Aparecium : Revealing A Few Facts (Part 1)

Potter-Fact 1

The first book of the Harry Potter series, Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone was published on June 26, 1997. It was approximately ten months before the Final Battle of Hogwarts was fought. It took place in the early hours of 2 May, 1998, within the castle and on the grounds of Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry. To this author J.K. Rowling when asked said...

"I open at the close."

Now to understand this clever reference by Rowling, I hope you guys remember the Golden Snitch.

Potter-Fact 2

Mirror of Erised : Harry Potter
and the Sorcerer's Stone
The Mirror of Erised (desire; when spelled backwards) is an ancient ornate mirror. The mirror shows the most desperate desire of a person's heart, a vision that has been known to drive men mad. It has clawed feet and a gold frame inscribed with the phrase...

" Erised stra ehru oyt ube cafru oyt on wohsi"

When you reflect this inscribed phrase in some other mirror it'd say,
"I show not your face but your hearts desire." with the spaces re-arranged.  (Try reading the phrase backwards.)

Potter-Fact 3

The Patronus Charm, Expecto Patronum is the most famous and one of the most powerful defensive charms known to wizardkind. It's an immensely complicated, very difficult spell that evokes a partially-tangible positive energy force physically visible as a silver light known as a Patronus or spirit guardian. It is the primary protection against Dementors and Lethifolds, to which there is no other protection.

Harry conjuring a Patronus Charm against Dementors : Harry
Potter and The Prisoner of Azkaban

This ancient and mysterious charm conjures a magical guardian, a projection of all your most positive feelings. Patronus, a guardian which generally takes the shape of the animal with whom the wizard conjuring it shares the deepest affinity.

The amazing thing about this charm is that in Latin language,

"Expecto Patronum" literally translates to "I await a guardian"

Potter-Fact 4

Since the Patronus is a physical representation of one's soul, James Potter's Stag and Lily Potter's Doe make them literal soul-mates.

A Doe : Lily Potter's Patronus

Potter-Fact 5

Ronald Weasley's patronus is a Jack Russell terrier, which is a breed of dog and is known for chasing otters. Now co-incidentally Hermionie Granger's patronus is an otter. Well...

The Marauder's Map

The Marauder's Map is a magical document that reveals almost all of Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry. Not only does it show every classroom, every hallway, and every corner of the castle, but it also shows every inch of the grounds, as well as all the secret passages that are hidden within its walls and the location of every person in the grounds, portrayed by a dot. It is also capable of accurately identifying each person, and is not fooled by Animagi, Polyjuice Potions, or Invisibility Cloaks; even the Hogwarts ghosts can't go undetected from this.

Made : Between 1975 and 1978

Manufacturer : The Marauders

Known Owners :

  • The Marauders
  • Argus Filch
  • Fred and George Weasely
  • Harry Potter
  • Remus Lupin
  • Barty Crouch Junior (as Alaster Moody)
  • James Potter II

Creation

The magic used in the map's creation is advanced and impressive; it includes the Homonculous Charm, enabling the possessor of the map to track the movements of every person in the castle, and it was also enchanted to forever repel (as insultingly as possible) the curiosity of their arch enemy, Severus Snape.

The Marauder's Map was created by,

  • Remus Lupin (Moony)
  • Peter Pettigrew (Wormtail)
  • Sirius Black (Padfoot)
  • James Potter (Prongs)

while they were attending Hogwarts. Collectively, these four were known as The Marauders.

The map was created between 1975 and 1978, because the titles on the map refer to the nicknames of these three men in their Animagus forms, and Lupin in Werewolf form. These four created the map with the help of the usage of Homonculous Charm, a powerful and advanced charm that enchanted the map to track the movements of everyone in the castle, as well as a charm to insult Severus Snape. The map proved quite useful to these four men (commonly termed as The Marauders) through the years, until it was confiscated by Argus Filch in their final year at Hogwarts.

Fred and George Weasley

Fred and George Weasley nicked the map from Filch's office in their first year at Hogwarts. They had been taken to his office for letting off a Dungbomb and there they saw a drawer marked, Confiscated and Highly Dangerous. George dropped another Dungbomb, while Fred stole the map from the drawer.

They had to experiment with it in order to learn how to get it to work, but it gave them clues, "flickering into life here and there" when they came close to the activating phrase, until finally they got it exactly. Because of this map, the twins memorized the secret passageways of Hogwarts which they used for quite a few of their many pranks.

Fig7 : Fred and George giving the map to Harry to help him visit Hogsmeade

In Harry Potter's third year at Hogwarts Fred and George gave the map to Harry, so that he could go to Hogsmeade on the weekends, in spite of the fact that he had not obtained a permission slip to do so from his gaurdians, Vernon Dursley and Petunia Dursley.

Harry's Usage of The Map

Fig8 : The Map's response to Severus Snape's
attempt to reveal the Map's secrets
Harry used the Map for the first time during his third year after the map was presented to him by Fred and George Weasley, when he tried to find his way into Hogsmeade. He used the One-Eyed Witch Passage which led into Honeydukes cellar.

The map however will insult anyone who doesn't know how to activate it.

Harry was wandering in the castle at night in search of already dead Peter Pettigrew, who was being shown on the map and Professor Snape caught the map while interrogating Harry and the map insulted Snape when he tried to mess around with it.

Professor Lupin did catch Harry with the map (after Snape found it while interrogating Harry), and subsequently confiscated it. It was through the map that the professor discovered Peter Pettigrew was still alive, leading him to conclude it was indeed Peter who had betrayed Harry's parents, in the process framing their old friend Sirius Black for the crime. This would go a long way towards repairing the rift between the two co-creaters of the map. He would return the map to Harry before leaving Hogwarts, at the end of third year.

Fig9 : Map showing Pettigrew alive
During his fourth year, Harry used the map to help him as he sneaked into the prefects' bathroom to work on his clue for the Second Task of the Triwizard Tournament. On his way back, he dropped the map, and it was almost taken by Severus Snape. Harry was saved by Barty Crouch Jr., disguised as Professor Alastor "Mad-Eye" Moody, who pretended it was his. Due to the map's flaw, it could not differentiate between the Junior and Senior Crouch. Crouch later asked to borrow the map from Harry, but after Crouch was unmasked, he reclaimed it.

"The map never lies." - Sirius Black

During Harry's sixth year, when he spent a great deal of time obsessing over Draco Malfoy's daily activities, he used the map often.

When monitoring Draco Malfoy, Harry found he often disappeared off the map. The cause of this was not revealed until after he asked Dobby to trail Draco to find out what he was doing when he disappeared off the map. Dobby discovered that Draco was disappearing into the Room of Requirement, which was not on the Marauder's Map. Whether because it was Unplottable or the Marauders never found the room.

Fig10 : Malfoy in the Room of Requirement

While on the run in looking for Horcruxes, Harry would often look at the map to see what Ginny Weasley, his love interest, was doing, which would hint that the map works from any location.

Moments before the start of the Battle of Hogwarts, Harry briefly used the map to search for Ron and Hermione but he did not find them as they were, at the time, in the Chamber of Secrets collecting Basilisk fangs with which they could destroy the last of Lord Voldemort's Horcruxes.

Harry Potter's legacy

After Harry Potter's defeat of Lord Voldemort during the Battle of Hogwarts, the map would not have been used for many years. Eventually, James Sirius Potter would steal the map from his father's desk.

Use

The map is normally disguised as a blank piece of parchment. To view the map, one must tap it with one's wand and recite, "I solemnly swear that I am up to no good." The content of the map will reveal itself.

To hide the contents of the map so the parchment appears blank again, one must again tap it and recite, "Mischief managed."

An added bonus is that if the bearer of the map approaches the entrance to a secret passage protected by a password, the password will appear on the map (usually as a speech bubble that appears close to the dot representing the Map's holder).
In some rare cases, the map may not be used to the best of its ability. Heading out through the secret passage from the Whomping Willow to the Shrieking Shack will make the person disappear, as Snape mentions in the spring of 1994, so the Shrieking Shack is not included on the map because it goes off the edge of the map. It also does not show any person that may be inside the Room of Requirement, as the Room of Requirement is unplottable and it itself does not show up on the map, or the Chamber of Secrets, as it is very unlikely that any of the creators of the map knew of its existence at the time that the map was made.

Additionally, the map does not differentiate between two people with the same name. This was the case with Barty Crouch Jr., who was simply shown as "Bartemius Crouch" on the map (instead of "Bartemius Crouch Jr"). This lead Harry Potter to believe that Barty Crouch Sr. was in Hogwarts, when he was actually at his own home at the time.

Fig11 : Bartemius Crouch Jr

Similarly, it identifies animagi by their actual name even when they are in their transformed state. It was by this mechanism that Lupin was able to identify Peter Pettigrew's presence at Hogwarts despite being presumed dead.

The map was impossible to be directly used by Severus Snape, as it was enchanted to insult him should he attempt to do so. However, Snape was able to make use of the map to view Remus Lupin entering the secret passage underneath the Whomping Willow, as Lupin had left the map accessible beforehand.

Special abilities of the map

The Map also shows how to access the sealed passages by showing the password required to un-seal it (displayed as a minuscule speech balloon shown close to the dot representing the user of the map that appears when the map's holder comes close to the available passages). More importantly, the Map shows the name and location of every person within the Hogwarts grounds, even if they are wearing an Invisibility cloak (as demonstrated when Remus Lupin saw Harry Potter, Ron Weasley, and Hermione Granger sneaking to Rubeus Hagrid's cabin under an Invisibility cloak), transformed animagi (evidenced by Lupin seeing Peter Pettigrew return to the school grounds from Hagrid's, despite being disguised as the rat Scabbers at the time), or under the influence of the Polyjuice Potion (as demonstrated when Harry saw Barty Crouch Jr., at the time disguised as Alastor Moody, ransacking Snape's office for more Polyjuice ingredients).

Extra Information about The Marauder's Map

The Marauder's Map, along with his wand and the Cloak of Invisibility, is Harry's only remaining treasure from his time at Hogwarts.

According to J. K. Rowling, Harry never gave the map to Teddy Lupin or any of his children, but his son James probably stole it from Harry's desk.

The magical defences on Hogwarts have been mentioned several times, including Hogwarts being unplottable. That implies that mapping Hogwarts is impossible, which is exactly what the Marauder's Map does. There are some possible loopholes for this: for example, making a place unplottable might simply make it impossible for it to be mapped with reference to somewhere else. As the Marauder's Map only covers Hogwarts, not its position relative to (for example) London, it would circumvent the theoretical unplottable charm.

The claim that the map shows "every" corner of Hogwarts is likely an exaggeration, as there is no indication that it shows the Chamber of Secrets or the Room of Requirement. However, the map was created based on the Marauders' knowledge of Hogwarts and as none of them were Parselmouths, they would not have been able to access the Chamber of Secrets. Considering that Fred and George had it during the opening of the Chamber of Secrets, and the disappearance of their sister into it, it seems very unlikely it showed the Chamber or they would have mentioned it. Also, it is possible that they did manage to find the Room of Requirement, but that the room itself is unplottable as need be. However, it is not very likely the Marauders did discover the Room of Requirement as Sirius never suggested the Room to Harry as a possible location for the meetings of Dumbledore's Army in Order of the Phoenix. It is also possible that Sirius didn't think about the Room of Requirement at the time.

In the book, the map is described as a single piece of parchment that could be laid on a desk in a classroom. In the film, the map is shown as a rather large, much-folded paper with several unfolding flaps within it.

In the film adaptation of Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince, one page is added to the Map, featuring the seventh-floor corridor.

While Hogwarts Castle is located on a large mountain in the films and video games, the map still shows the Castle on level ground.

In a deleted scene of film adaptation of Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince, the map shows Draco Malfoy's name as just "Malfoy"; this is a mistake, as the map is supposed to show both given names and surnames.

There is a toy version of the Map in every copy of the video game version of Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix, which is an exact replica of the in-game Map.

A real-size replica of the Marauder's Map prop can be bought at Noble Collection.

In the film adaptation of Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban, Moony is misspelled "Mooney" as an inside joke to the film's visual effects supervisor, Karl Mooney.

In the film adaption of Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban, When Harry was walking down one of the corridors one night, he saw Peter Pettigrew's name appear on the map before being caught by Snape, which was the first hint of Peter still being alive. This did not occur in the book.

Harry retrieved the Marauders Map when Barty Crouch Jr. took it, by simply taking it from the fake Moody's office at the end of the school year. (Rowling had forgotten to mention it.)
Also in the film adaptation of Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban, while Albus Dumbledore is pacing in his office, his name is spelt Albvs Dvmbledore. This was most likely done simply to give the impression of age. During the late middle ages, 'v' and 'u' were used interchangably, with 'v' always appearing at the beginning of a word and 'u' always appearing in the middle or at the end of a word.

The map is David Thewlis' favourite prop from the series.

In the PlayStation 2 and Xbox video game adaptations of Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban, Draco Malfoy uses the potion to turn into Ron to trick Harry into following him into a trap while trying to find Sirius Black. Despite the fact that the Map never lies about identity, it still names Draco as Ron.

For the Harry Potter films, the Marauder's Map was hand-made by MinaLima Design with ink and paper.

It is unknown if the map shows deceased people. Barty Crouch Jr. does not show any sign of seeing his father's body represented on the map, but he could have seen it and not told anyone.
The glossary on the Scholastic official website incorrectly claims that both Harry and Ron used the Marauder's Map to get to Hogsmeade.

HE -WHO -MUST -NOT -BE -NAMED

Lord Voldemort
Tom Marvolo Riddle (31 December, 1926– 2 May, 1998), later known as Lord Voldemort, was a half-blood wizard and considered to be one of the most powerful Dark Wizards of all time. The son of wealthy Muggle Tom Riddle Senior and witch Merope Gaunt, he was orphaned and raised in a Muggle orphanage, which remained his permanent residence through his 1938-1945 attendance at Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry. He was a member of Slytherinhouse.

Signature:-

His accomplishments included the opening of Salazar Slytherin's Chamber of Secrets and the use of its monster to attack Muggle-born students; several months' service as a purchasing agent for the Dark artefacts shop Borgin and Burkes; and the attainment of immortality between the years of 1944 and 1998, a process begun upon the creation of his first Horcrux at the age of 16. Abandoning his 'Muggle' name, he became the self-proclaimed Lord Voldemort, commanded a veritable army of wizards and Dark creatures, committed numerous murders personally and through his followers, on one occasion nearly succeeded and on a later occasion did succeed in taking over theMinistry of Magic by installing a puppet Minister. Splitting his soul into a total of eight pieces, Lord Voldemort created seven Horcruxes, one unintentionally and without his knowledge.

EARLY LIFE :    Tom Riddle grew up in a dingy orphanage, completely unaware of his wizarding heritage. Since the Muggle orphanage staff did not know anything about his mother, they did not know about his magical background.

Tom Riddle at 11 years of age.
"I can make things move without touching them. I can make animals do what I want without training them. I can make bad things happen to people who are mean to me. I can make them hurt if I want to...I can speak to snakes too. They find me, they whisper to me. "
—Eleven-year-old Tom Riddle to Albus Dumbledore

At a very early age, it is clear that Tom displayed a desire to be different and set apart from others (as it is hinted when he mentions his dislike of his own name, because it is such a common name). He was not surprised at all upon being informed by Dumbledore that he was a wizard—he was, in fact, eager to believe that he had special gifts that no one else had. Tom also showed an eminent fear of death, considering it a human weakness. He claimed that his mother could not have been a witch, because if she was magical, then she would have been able to avoid dying.

YEARS IN HOGWARTS:
A 16 year-old Riddle during the 1943
opening of the Chamber of Secrets

Tom was educated at Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry from 1938 to 1945, and was Sorted into Slytherin House, a nod to his ancestor Salazar Slytherin himself. During summer breaks, he was forced to return to the Muggle orphanage, which he despised and dreaded more than any other place on earth.Tom became obsessed with his heritage and began researching it with an insatiable hunger. He learned of his Slytherin ancestry, discovered the existence of the Chamber of Secrets under Hogwarts, during his fifth year, and tamed the basilisk which dwelt within. As the Heir of Slytherin through his mother's family, Tom was able to open the Chamber Slytherin had left behind in order to "purge the school of all those who are unworthy to study magic"—in Tom and Slytherins' eyes, Muggle-borns.

Tom disappeared for ten long years. He slipped deeper into the Dark Arts, travelled extensively, consorted with disreputable people, started to become distorted in appearance from his Horcruxes, and began to use the alias "Lord Voldemort" openly.Ten years after Smith's murder, Tom appealed once more to the Headmaster of Hogwarts, who was then Albus Dumbledore, for the position of Professor of Defence Against the Dark Arts. His true desire was to learn more of Hogwarts' secrets and recruit followers. Dumbledore denied him the position, suspicious of his intentions. The position was thenceforth cursed by Tom Riddle; teachers only held the position for a year, afterwards suffering some terrible fate or humiliation that caused them to leave the position.
The Rise of the Dark Lord : Lord Voldemort, as he was now exclusively called, spent the next fourteen years before the War gathering followers in witches and wizards who called themselves, collectively, Death Eaters. In 1970, Voldemort started the First Wizarding War by taking advantage of the wizarding world's greatest weakness: the beings and creatures that they had outcast. The Dark Lord recruited the giants, who had long ago been driven by wizards into the mountains, and werewolves, who were persecuted by most witches and wizards.

 The Prophecy:

The Prophecy

Ten years into the War, when Voldemort was at the height of his power, a prophecy was given by Sybill Trelawney to Albus Dumbledore which predicted the fall of the Dark Lord. This prophecy was given in the Hog's Head Inn during an interview for the position of Professor of Divination.

There were, at the time, two babies to whom the prophecy could refer — Harry Potter, the half-blood son of James and Lily Potter; and Neville Longbottom, the pure-blood son of Alice and Frank Longbottom. Both families had sought to thwart Voldemort three times, and both families were members of the Order of the Phoenix. Both children in question were born at the end of the seventh month, July. Voldemort chose to target Harry instead of Neville; Dumbledore suspected this was because Harry shared a similar family heritage with Voldemort, both of them being half-bloods. Lord Voldemort was eventually defeated and Harry Potter was saved by his mother Lily Potter and thus the young boy became famous as the "boy who lived".

Voldemort lost his physical form and was weak and powerless, but he remained alive in ghostly form. The Horcruxes he had created kept his spirit bound to the physical world. He retreated to the forests of Albania, where he had previously found his fifth Horcrux, The Lost Diadem of Ravenclaw, and waited for his faithful Death Eaters to find him, but many of them now believed him dead, and those still faithful to him were either dead or in Azkaban. Voldemort was still very weak and about to give up all hope when, in 1994, his servant Peter Pettigrew, a.k.a. Wormtail, who had faked his own death years earlier and hid from authorities in his Animagus form of a rat, had returned to his master. Together, they built a rudimentary body that Voldemort used for travel and performing magic.

With Voldemort no longer needing to keep
his actions silent, the Second Wizarding War
had begun. The Dementors left Azkaban to
side with the Dark Lord, who could offer them
more scope for their powers. As a result,
there were many attacks by the monsters.

Battle of Hogwarts :

The open war: the Millennium Bridge
being brought down by Death Eaters
"I know that you are preparing to fight. Your efforts are futile. You cannot fight me. I do not want to kill you. I have great respect for the teachers of Hogwarts. I do not want to spill magical blood. Give me Harry Potter, and none shall be harmed. Give me Harry Potter, and I shall leave the school untouched. Give me Harry Potter, and you will be rewarded. You have until midnight."    - Lord Voldemort

Battle of Hogwarts took place in the castle of Hogwarts. It was a very fierce battle and the last one for Lord Voldemort. Everyone fought valiantly against Voldemort and his death eaters. Many died in this deadly battle.  When Harry and Voldemort came face to face in the battle, Harry revealed that the Elder wand was now rightfully his. But Voldemort refused to believe this. Voldemort fired the Killing Curse at Harry, while Harry countered with his "trademark" spell of Expelliarmus. The Elder Wand refused to kill its true master, and Voldemort's spell rebounded off Harry's, killing Tom Marvolo Riddle once and for all.

Voldemort's mangled soul in Limbo

Post-mortem

After his death, Voldemort's body was moved to a separate chamber away from the Great Hall. It is unknown what happened to it afterwards. Voldemort's mutilated soul was, meanwhile, trapped in Limbo for eternity, unable to move on or return as a ghost.
